How to design a mobile app for learning to code
There are many ways to learn to code, but for most people the best way to learn is with hands-on examples.
In a new paper published online in Science, researchers from the University of Twente in the Netherlands report a new approach to teaching computer science to beginners.
The approach, which uses a virtual reality headset, uses a brain-computer interface to allow the subjects to learn a coding task using just their eyes, and a computer system to provide feedback.
This approach makes the students’ brains and hands able to process a large number of different input signals and then process those results to learn the language, the researchers say.
They’re able to do this because the headsets are placed on the subjects’ bodies and in their eyes.
“We know that brain activity is associated with language learning,” said lead researcher Christoph Haefele.

The sensors are placed in the eyes of the students, allowing them to take in images and video, listen to sounds and interact with the virtual world.
In the experiment, the students were shown images and videos of different languages and asked to use their hands to type.
The researchers then used a computer to provide an analysis of the learning.
“When we see the word ‘apple’, for example, the computer starts to calculate a neural net,” said Haefle.
“After a few seconds of practice, the system has a good grasp on the language.””

Other researchers have used similar methods in the past.
The first such study was conducted by University of Cambridge researcher Paul Cogley in 2012.
The research showed that it was possible to use a virtual environment to help students learn the English language.
“There are a lot of benefits of virtual environments, such as having them to play games, to see people, to talk to them, to read books, to watch TV and so on,” said Cogleys co-author and research scientist at the University’s Centre for Computer Learning and Simulation, David Haines.
“However, these are very rare opportunities to use them.
The reason why we’ve come up with the new approach is that we wanted to create a new form of virtual learning, and this is exactly what we did.”
The technology, called Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), can also be used for face-to-face learning.
The technology is based on the fact that brain stimulation in the brain can alter the way a brain processes information, which can then influence the way that the brain responds to new information.
“When we stimulate a part of the brain that controls learning, we can influence how that brain processes new information,” said Prof Haefe.
Although the researchers are confident the technology works, they do not know how long the students will be able to learn.
“What we can say is that this is an experiment, but we’re very excited by the possibilities,” said Dr Haefeles.
In addition to the students in the research, Prof Haepeles team has also recruited students from the public university and several universities in the US.
It is also planning to publish results from the study in an upcoming issue of the journal Computers in Human Behavior.
